Cover Me

THEME: Cover Art Connections

A smaller crowd this week, but no less exciting, as we gazed at connecting covers at the record club. So, we were all asked to bring a pile of records with a theme that links the cover art. We had some good stuff to look at(hopefully Leslie will post some photos soon) and we had good stuff to listen to too. Hagen brought in a color spectrum of covers, while Leslie stuck to pastels. Eric had many hats on his covers, while Ryan had many flags. I brought lots of cut out figures on white fields, and Beverly brought in all hand drawn covers.

Forgot to bring a mic this week, and one of the turntables is broken, so it's a very minimal podcast this week. The theme next week is "soundtrack to an imaginary film." Everyone has to bring a set of music that would be used to score a movie that we might produce. Expect lots of inspiring end credits music.

See you then,
Malcolm

3.19.07
THEME: Light & Dark

We got to meet Leslie's mom and experimented with the sound effects built into the mixer, including a laser gun and a bomb, at last nights record club. It was Light & Dark, Birth & Death, Mom & The Bomb, Bom & The Momb. Sorry, i'm trying to sound like chris in the morning from northern exposure. Anyway, lots of good music was heard. The podcast is a little quieter then usual (still getting used to the new mixer technology) except for the Isley Brothers song that i had to crank because it really is THE jam. Listen for mark's exciting laser gun song on the podcast too. Next week's theme is chose your own cover art sub-theme. Meaning, all the album art of each set will have common thread connecting it.

I realize that now that the on air personality has been eliminated, there's no real way to get the track listing online. Bev has been keeping track, and if you really want to get the list you might get in touch with her and convince her to give it to you.

Till next week,
Malcolm

Everybody makes out

3.12.07
THEME: Make out with Leslie night

It's too nice outside for me to write much today. Plus, Leslie advised me not to reveal too much about the nights proceedings, as they were of a personal nature.

No MC this time around, and there's some nicer transitions because of a new mixer courtesy of Ryan. Enjoy the podcast. Next week we explore the battle between light and dark.

Enjoy,
Malcolm

1 Year and Counting

3.5.07
THEME: The 1st Year's Best

This evening marked the one year anniversary of the Kalamazoo Record Club, and we celebrated with lp shaped cookies and t-shirts made by Bev and Les and lots of great tunes that were previously introduced over the past year. The theme challenged us to repeat our best sets of the past year, and it proved to be a memorable and breathtaking journey into our rich shared musical past. I missed a few of those early dates, so it was a particular joy to hear Hagen and Aaron spin such gems as the Ewok Celebration(sung in ewokese), the Fame song and some other tracks first played at the soundtrack theme night. We got to see some great visual aids(sorry we don't have pictures, but trust me they were cool.) Beverly spun her homemade disco light and we jammed out to some ABBA, and Leslie palyed some stuff while we watched bugs form and fight in Microcosmos.

All and all, some great music on the podcast. Again I apologize for the obnoxious and yet boring rants between songs. It's really sad that I haven't improved as an MC. I'm hoping Larry King will die soon, and his ghost will come to me at night and give me tips. I'm 98.9% positive that next week we'll have two turntable and no microphone, and the sounds will flow more freely. The theme next week is "make-out with leslie night." We're bringing all music by artists we think that Leslie Grossman would be compelled to make-out with, if given the opportunity. I'm gonna have to dig out some Ted Nugent.

Till then,
Malcolm
