Woo Who?

7.30.07
THEME: How to Woo ______ (blank)

So for those who were wondering, and who wasn't, this weeks theme was apparently inspired by this line from Days of the Week night "Sassy, how to woo Michelangelo". Don't ask, I'm not really sure although I believe it is a reference to the defunct cult fave teen magazine. Beverly wanted a slightly more abstract theme for the upcoming week and well, I guess we just sort of sat back and watched what happened.

It was a reunion week of sorts with Kirsten in the house, hopefully for good, and far surpassing that old adage about "the test of a true woman is how good she cuts a nut cake". Erick was back from the depths of Ohio, and Malcolm made it in from the Windy City with an ever inspired set of Freudian cover art. Oh yeah, Leslie was here too. Beverly put in a cameo as her time these past few days has been devoted to her upcoming show, August 3rd, and sure to be good.

So who did we woo? Winona Rider, so long as it's not under water; anyone who appreciates a good vinyl sourced mix tape; me; you; Sigmund; and any number of standard movie couples whose scenes were visualized as the soundtrack played.

What exactly does it mean to woo? The first definition I found is To seek the affection of with intent to romance. Merriam-Webster is a bit more forceful with the words, To sue for the affection of and usually marriage with. The root appears to be Middle English wowen, from Old English wOgian transitive verb.

Anyhow, perhaps we're not quite ready for marriage yet or maybe we're just a little romantically challenged. Next weeks theme is Breaking Up. We'd considered Sexy Music but it just didn't seem appropriate so soon after all this wooing and besides, I'd just played the Chipmunks.

Sunday, Monday, Record Club

7.23.07
THEME: Days of the Week

Another summer of record club continues to move lazily on... With Leslie still sequestered on the East Coast and Erick elsewhere for his first ever absence, this past Monday was a more intimate affair. But fear not, although physcially elsewhere Erick was present in both spirit and vinyl having had the forsight to drop off a mini-set with Beverly prior to his departure. It was noted, however, that his selection of Bowie's 1984 did contain some decidedly disco strings.

Aaron hosted, graciously supplying Touaqa and coctail peanuts. It was a pleasant surprise that Kirsten stopped in, drawn, no doubt, by the sirenesque sounds drifting over the park. Several songs, both in the genera of the blues, featured the words Stormy and Monday in their titles. Mondays must have a particular reputation. Aaron played a second Electrelane album, thouroughly impressing me again and this time I remembered to write down their name.

And finally a wee vocabulary lesson arising from the evening:
  • Antonym - A word having a meaning opposite to that of another word
  • Homonym - One of two or more words that have the same sound and often the same spelling but differ in meaning, such as bank (embankment) and bank (place where money is kept).
  • Synonym - A word having the same or nearly the same meaning as another word or other words in a language.
Next weeks theme will be How to woo ______. With blank being some famous, well know, or at least know to us, entity. And Ryan, no hard feelings on the cats.

Don't Believe Everything Your Read

7.16.07
THEME: Lies

Whilst sitting around the turntable thoughts and conversation tend to drift. Where they go, and how they get there, are sometimes more clear than others. Do you suppose any of the following to be true?
  • Pauly Shore will play Dave in the new Chipmunks movie.
  • Tusk is the White Album of the '70s.
  • When Tusk first came out everyone hated it.
  • GnR sounds good at 45 RPM. (Better even than Def Leppard?)
  • Kevin Seconds can pack five years of lies into 30 seconds.
  • She's living for her car, church, & volleyball.
  • When people historians study the early 1980s and red leather fashion talk will first turn to a) The Romantics or b) Loverboy.
Not unlike unlike sands through an hourglass next weeks theme is Days of the Week.

Squaring the Circle

7.9.07
THEME: Circles & Squares

Tonight Record Club tackled one of the great problems of Classical Geometry. It was a bold undertaking as Kalamazoo found itself in the grips of a midsummer heat wave but everyone did a bang up job interpreting the theme in their own way.

Most everyone chose a preferred shape with a cameo appearance by the other. Aaron chose circle featuring cover art while the Leslie/Pat duo reciprocated with squares and/or rectangles. Erick made Tuaca coladas and Kirsten quite. Actually she's just taking some time off for technical reasons. At least that's what we keep telling ourselves. She will be missed even though "She never liked us anyways so who gives a shit", said Ryan with tears in his eyes.

Next weeks theme is lies. Or lies and the lying liars that tell them. Apparently weather's introduced a little angst this week, or at least a touch of plagiarism.

Hey Good Lookin'

7.2.07
THEME: Cosmetology

Yeah, it's been a few weeks now with no updates. Bad record club blog-master. At least people noticed.

I've lost my notes from this night but if found I'll update. As memory serves Leslie was back in town from D.C. and hosted the evening's festivities while Beverly enjoyed the company of her extended family. I forgot that I'd wanted to bring the Smurfs and I believe all of Eric's albums featured photographs of the artists playing guitar. There were lots of songs about hair.

Theme for the following week is/was circles & squares inspired I believe by a comment on how everything has come full circle.
